Food inspiration for the water festival

What is Thai Songkran Festival?

Thursday, April 13, 2023

Songkran Festival marks the start of the traditional Thai new year. Even though Thailand celebrates the new year on the 1st of January since 1940, this traditional festival lives on. It is celebrated on the 13th of April in Thailand and Laos. Songkran literally means; changing places, in this case referring to the sun changing position.

Water Festival

In the bigger cities, the Songkran festival is celebrated for 3 to 7 days. Traditionally, Songkran was a time to visit and pay respect to the elderly, relatives, friends and neighbours. Today it is a festival dedicated to cleansing sins committed in the previous year and represents renewal and a new and fresh start in the new year.

This festival is also referred to as ‘the water festival’ as people splash water on each other. Young people show their respect to their grandparents, elderly relatives, and monks by pouring water into their hands. Many people spend these holidays with their families and visit a local temple to pay their respects to the monks. Because this festival takes place in a hot season, refreshment is welcome. This tradition originally started to show respect towards each other, a new beginning, and cleanliness. There is music, dancing, drinking, and fun all over!
