What to eat during Songkran?

What is Thai Songkran Festival?

Tuesday, April 13, 2021

Songkran Festival marks the start of the traditional Thai new year. Even though Thailand celebrates the new year on the 1st of January since 1940, this traditional festival lives on. It is celebrated on the 13th of April in Thailand and Laos. Songkran literally means: changing places, in this case referring to the sun changing position.

What to do during Songkran?

In the bigger cities, the Songkran festival is being celebrated for 3 to 7 days in a row. People go back to their place of birth to celebrate with their families. This festival is also referred to as ‘the water festival’ as people splash water on each other. Because this festival takes place in a hot season, refreshment is welcome. This tradition originally started as a way to show respect towards each other, a new beginning, and cleanliness. There is music, dancing, drinking, and fun all over! The younger generations honor the older generations.
